First Day (Observation week)

Grade 5-A Students

DATE: January 14, 2019- 5th Day

  At 6:30 in the morning, we were fetched by Mr. Sahrun, the driver of the Dean. At 6:45 I arrived at SDN84 Kendari. I went straight to the faculty room and the teacher aren’t there yet. After how many minutes, the teachers arrived at the faculty room. I saw how they greet their co-teachers, and the teachers greeted me and I grab their hand as a sign of respect it is like “Pag-mano” in the Philippines. I thought that Muslim people don’t do “mano” but as what I’ve observed during my stay there, students are doing “mano” to their teachers and sometimes they kiss their hands. At 7:30 am, the flag ceremony started. After the flag ceremony, I was introduced to the students and they are all very excited and happy to meet me and so am I. We went to the class of Ibu putu which is the grade 5 A. As I entered the class, they are all very happy and excited to talk to me. I sat on the table of ibu putu and started to write down all my observations and Ibu putu is discussing. While listening to the discussion of ibu putu, I was shocked because the subject that she is teaching is different from what I have expected. I asked her on what subject will I teach. However, she didn’t understand me. She thought that I am going to teach that day. So, I teach the students instead. I teach them basic English and they are all very happy. I taught them on how to introduce themselves in English. After my class, I went back to the faculty room and I was approached by one of the teachers that can speak English. Because all of them except one cannot speak English. Ibu Eni asked me what did I do during my stay in the class of Ibu putu. I asked her on what subject am I going to teach in the class of Ibu Putu because I thought I will be handling English subject. Then, Ibu Eni talked with the teachers and then they transferred me to the class of Ibu zatna who handles the grade 6.

Lessons Learned:

Today, I’ve learned on how will I understand them despite of the language barrier. I learned on how to read body languages. Most of them doesn’t speak English. So, I am the one who needs to adjust. They are talking to me in Bahasa Indonesia and I slightly understand them by reading gestures and body languages. Luckily, I am Kapampangan there are similar Bahasa Indonesia words to Kapampangan that’s why I was able to understand them. I learned on how to adjust myself in their culture. Like on how to respect others which is very similar to the Philippines. With this, I’ve learned that as a student teacher, we are not just here to teach but also, we need the good manners to respect others just like my experience here in Indonesia.
